A story from a parent in the Camas school district that you may want to be aware of. When this happens in one district it may be more likely to show up in others.
SKYRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL. HERE IS THEIR STORY:
“The Camas district office transferred me to Skyridge middle school office without giving any information on the sex ed program. After requesting information on the sex ed program the administrator transferred me to the teacher’s voicemail. The next day the teacher called to say I can come down to the office MAYBE to view the booklet that he’s going to teach from…MAYBE. He did say it was made easier this year to opt kids out because school buildings are closed and usually a parent would have to sit through the aids/hiv part before the opt out form is made available. He then stated that the opt out form will be available at front office for parents to sign. Kids who opt out will be required to do a report on any subject that pertains to health. They go to the library to work on it instead of sex ed class. When I pointed out to the teacher that by law they must allow me to view the entire curriculum the teacher’s responded saying no digital file exists and students will be taught from the workbook… the one I was also told by him that the office had a copy of, if not he can give them a copy. Then maybe I can review it, but I cannot take it home. Topics that kids ask about in class, that are not covered in the workbook, may or may not be answered.”Parents, insist that you be allowed to view the sex ed curriculum at your child’s school, and then opt them out of sex ed. Here is a link to the post containing the opt out form from the OSPI.
