It’s official: Ditching the SATs was a big mistake

Food for thought.. Brought to us by the Washington Examiner written by Jon Miltimore republished at Zero Hedge The state of education in the US is at a crossroads. Money isn't the solution. Focus on basics with full parental engagement and a societal commitment to establish new expectations is the only solution. In early 2020, the University of California set the tone for the rest of the country when its regents voted to drop SAT and ACT admissions requirements through 2024. That decision, initially framed as a pandemic necessity, quickly reshaped admissions nationwide. By late 2022, roughly 1,750 schools, or about 80 percent of U.S. universities, had adopted test-optional … [Read more...]

How Public Education Failed in the Liberal Enclaves That Care About It Most

From an article published at The Intelligencer by Andrew Rice. This is a 3 cups of coffee/tea article. Last winter, the federal government released the results of its semi-annual reading and math tests of fourth- and eighth-graders, assessments that are considered the most authoritative measure of the state of learning in American elementary and middle schools. In nearly every category, the scores had plunged to levels unseen for decades — or ever. On reading tests, 40 percent of fourth-graders and one-third of eighth-graders performed below “basic,” the lowest threshold. A separate assessment of 12th-graders conducted this past spring — the first since schools were shuttered by the … [Read more...]

The Nation’s Report Card Shows the Worst Results Since 1992

This mornings article is a blog post from Conservative Ladies of America: The Nation’s Report Card Shows the Worst Results Since 1992 - Conservative Ladies of America Today, September 9, 2025, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called the “Nation’s Report Card”, released its latest results for 12th-grade students in reading and math, and for 8th-grade students in science. The findings are not just disappointing, they are alarming. Scores have dropped across the board, and the achievement gap is widening. This isn’t just a data point, it’s a national emergency that demands immediate action. Math: A Widening Gap in Foundational Skills The average math score … [Read more...]

National and WA State 8th and 4th grade test results

Brought to you by the good people at Edunomics A timely update from the Edunomics Lab at Georgetown’s McCourt School.  Today’s NAEP scores provide a reckoning of sorts. In contrast to each state’s annual assessments, the NAEP enables a comparison of student learning across states and over time. These last two years in public education have been unlike any before. Students were emerging from deep pandemic-era learning losses just as $190B in relief funds began to rain down on schools. Now for the truth bomb: In states like KY, LA, MS, TN, and WV that answer is yes. Students in these states saw real (even if modest) score gains … [Read more...]

Washington Ranked 34th in Math Recovery and 26th in Reading Between 2019 and 2024

Today we bring you a report card on Washington State K-12 schools. This report, in its original format, can be found at: Washington - Education Recovery Scorecard For the national press release and findings click here.  At the bottom of the original article are links to all school districts in Washington State. Washington Ranked 34th in Math Recovery and 26th in Reading Between 2019 and 2024 Average student achievement in Washington remains half a grade level below 2019 levels in math and in reading. Latest Oregon testing data shows schools continue to struggle in math, science and English

This article was published at OPB. Specific information by school district can be found by clicking the link: View the full results, including statewide and individual district or school data, online here. Oregon’s latest summative test data show incremental progress in some areas. But overall, the state is still behind pre-pandemic performance levels, and the percentages of students who are proficient in math, English and science remain staggeringly low. The Oregon Department of Education released its standardized assessment data on Thursday. The results, which reflect student testing this past spring, are a one-time snapshot of the state’s educational system. Students in grades 3-8 … [Read more...]

Teachers Union Demands Ending Basic Skills Test For Teachers?

In this article from MSN.com (yes that super liberal "media" they share about information from a New Jersey teachers union suggesting getting rid of standards. If this gets a foothold how long before it gets to your school district? BTW: In SW Washington State public schools are now roughly 2x the cost of private schools. Here's the story: The New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) is urging the end of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test, describing it as an unnecessary barrier to addressing teacher shortages. The NJEA successfully pushed for the elimination of the Teacher Performance Assessment test last year. “When the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) … [Read more...]

High School graduation rates go up during the pandemic? Ready to buy the bridge in the desert?

Ok...if you tell people something and swear it's true they must believe it...right? So today we get an email from the WA State Superintendent of Schools with this headline: "Graduation Rates Rise for the Class of 2020". Following is the text from that article...however...read between the lines. It appears they lowered the requirements to graduate which caused the graduation rate to increase...right... This comes from Chris Reykdal...State Superintendent...who is quoted as saying that online learning is a disaster and use "colorful language" to describe his feelings. If everything is so good why the problems? Change the rules to get a better number and spin like crazy. Here's a link to … [Read more...]
