Evergreen SD District 5 Bernard vs Gronwoldt

Both candidates were sent a list of 12 questions and offered the opportunity to respond over a 30 day period. Only Louis Bernard responded. Ms. Gronwoldt is the incumbent and must have felt it wasn’t necessary to respond.

Consider that Mr. Bernard took the time and effort to share his views. If you think it’s time to install some new blood in the Evergreen district please consider him. If you reach out to either candidate and get responses please share them with us so we can update the article.

The Evergreen district has massive shortfalls in the budget. Strikes. Multiple superintendents and transparency issues. Consider if it’s time to replace the incumbent and hire someone with new fresh ideas.

Update: The Democrat Party has posted their endorsement of Ms. Gronwoldt. The Republican Party has endorsed Mr. Bernard

Here are the questions sent to both candidates:

Q1: Given the poor student test scores, what are your proposals to improve learning and outcomes?

Q2: Given that an estimated 50% of the entire state budget goes to K-12 education, what are your thoughts about improving efficiencies in local spending?

Q3: What’s your position on Parental Rights?

Q4: Should parents have the right to choose public or private education for their children?

Q5: What’s your position about transgender crossover in sports?

Q6: Should school district negotiations with unions be public? Why or Why Not?

Q7: What is your position on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)?

Q8: What is your position on Critical Race Theory?

Q9: What’s your position on Mandated Pronouns?

Q10: Should school boards play an active role in running the school district or should the board hire a superintendent and let them run the show with minimal board input?

Q11: What are the top 3 issues you think need to be addressed in your school district and what would you do about them?

Q12: What other topics or issues would you like to address?

Answer to Q1: Firstly, I’d say that regular attendance must be improved. Secondly, I’d like to review the curriculum while additionally looking at what other districts are doing successfully. Thirdly, the classroom disruptions must be significantly reduced by enforcing current disciplinary policies.

Answer to Q2: Having been self-employed in the private sector for over thirty years, I must say that ESD is in trouble financially due to a ten-year decline in enrollment, pour management, and state/federal funding cuts. There are currently six thousand fewer students now than there was ten years ago resulting in $90 million in lost revenue. It is my current view that the district must get lean by looking at all budget items which may include school consolidation and potential closures.

Answer to Q3: It is my view that parents are the sole custodian of children, not the state.

Answer to Q4: Yes, parents do have the right to choose whether to send their child to public or private school. In terms of funding, I support the idea of a voucher system where tax dollars follow the student to the parents’ school of choice.

Answer to Q5: I am firmly against the idea of biological males competing against biological girls in sports. It is unfair, disrespectful, and unsafe for our girls.

Answer to Q6: I believe in transparency, but also understand that emotions may flair during negotiations, and violence may ensue thus the need for privacy.

Answer to Q7: It is my belief that there is no place for in K-12 schools for such nonsense. “Back to Basics” please.

Answer to Q8: same as above.

Answer to Q9: They are ridiculous and have no place in K-12 schools. No nonsense please.

Answer to Q10: Yes, I do believe that a diverse group of directors is essential for a properly functioning school district and that the superintendent implements the decisions of the board.

Answer to Q11:

1) Let’s get “Back to Basics” academically and provide a worthwhile education by

eliminating non-essential curriculum,

2) Let’s get “Back to Basics” fiscally so the taxpayers get value for what they’re paying for by

reducing unnecessary administrators,

3) School security for the safe keeping of our children should include common sense voluntary

police trained concealed carry permit holders.

Answer to Q12: I, Louis Bernard, pledge to prohibit any flags in the classroom other than Washington state & United States of America flags (i.e. BLM, Antifa, etc). I pledge to prohibit any and all attempts to indoctrinate, groom, or otherwise attempt to confuse the innocent young minds and bodies of our children as to their gender or sexuality.
