They who control the message control the outcome…
In Washington State, when we deal with education, OSPI and their minions seek to control the meaning of words and the terminology. Here are a few examples:
- Common Core is being renamed to: WSLS (Washington State Learning Standards)
- Opt-Out is in the process of being renamed to: Refusal
When the powers feel that a word or term has become negative and is causing them to lose control they simply give it a new name to misdirect and confuse those who oppose them. The only way to play the game is to refuse to allow them to control the dictionary. We need to refuse to allow them to dictate the names and hold them accountable at every turn.
When faced with getting parents to remove their children from testing call the effort what it is: Opt-Out. When someone attempts to correct you stop them and tell them they are wrong.
When the education people tell you Common Core is now WSLS…stop them and make it clear that Common Core is still Common Core no matter how hard they try to muddy the waters.
Share some of your phrases, names or terminology that those in power are attempting to rename.
