Southwest Washington Candidates and K-12 Education

In May and again during the Summer of 2018 we emailed each of the candidates for the 3rd Congressional; 17th; 18th and 49th and asked them to respond to some basic questions regarding K-12 education:

What is/are your position(s) on the following K-12 education topics:

  1. Washington State Education Financing – Is it sufficient or not and what (if anything) would you change or do if elected?
  2. What is your position on Common Core and the required testing (SBAc)?
  3. What (if any) role does the US Dept of Education have in K-12 education and should it continue to exist?
  4. What are the top three (3) actions/steps you would take regarding K-12 education?

Who responded?

3rd Congressional: Neither Ms. Long nor Ms. Herrera Beutler responded

17th Position #1: Neither Ms. Harris nor Ms. Kraft responded

17th Position #2: Damion Jiles did respond (2018_Elected_Office_Candidate_K-12_Education_Questions_Jiles) . Mr. Harris did not

18th Position #1: Mr. Thobaben responded (2018_Elected_Office_Candidate_K-12_Education_Questions for Chris Thobaben running for 18th LD Pos 1). Mr. Vick did not respond

18th Position #2: Ms. Gillespie responded (2018_Elected_Office_Candidate_K-12_Education_Questions_Gillespie). Mr. Hoff did not.

49th Position #1: Ms. Wylie did not respond

49th Position #2: Ms. Stonier did not respond

We don’t endorse candidates. Saying that we think candidates who take the time to respond deserve first consideration (regardless of party affiliation). If you know where a candidate stands it may help you make your decision. We always wonder why candidates don’t respond…are they afraid it will hurt them or is it they don’t want to be bothered?

KL-12 education is a big deal in Washington State. 52% of the State budget goes to education. Massive property tax increases…and an effort to raise them even more. So, if you haven’t already asked your local candidates for their positions pick up the phone now and ask them the same 4 questions we did.
