Depth of Knowledge in Public Schools – What the Heck is it?

Depth of Knowledge also referred to as D.O.K.,  is the complexity or depth of understanding required to answer or explain an assessment related item or a classroom activity. The concept of depth of knowledge was developed through research by Norman L. Webb in the late 1990’s. Webb was a senior research scientist at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. Teachers and Parents – Removing Common Core

Teachers’ Opposition To Common Core Increases SEPTEMBER 29, 2015 ~ ANNPCRONIN It takes a lot to oppose the Common Core State Standards when they are said to offer: reform! rigor! high academic standards approved by states and consistent with other nations! a guarantee to close the achievement gap! college and career readiness! This opposition has increased in the past two years. In 2013, just 24% of American teachers were opposed to the Common Core, and 35% of American citizens were opposed.  The increase in opposition … [Read more...]

Is collectivism in education in China better than what we have now?

There are those who say that the United States should make more of an effort to emulate China's approach to education. They cite their belief that the structure, rigor and focus produces better results. The link in this blog post takes you to the Facebook page of a woman who was born in China and grew up under their system. This woman shares her experiences as a young child in China under Mao. She suggests that those who believe that a collectivism approach (like China) is the way to go should think twice. After reading her post what do you think? https://www.facebook.com/693477984029441/photos/a.693905133986726.1073741826.693477984029441/935245776519326/?type=1&fref=nf … [Read more...]
