US Senate – Washington

Based on the results of the August 2016 Primary the candidates for the November election are:

Chris Vance

  • In the primary we posed a series of questions to each of the candidates. Mr. Vance…sort of…responded: C_Vance_SWWEducation_Questions_Response
  • Here is my education position paper:

Both my kids graduated from public schools in Washington.  My wife is a special education paraeducator in the Auburn school district.  I served on the House Education Committee in the legislature, and have spent the past several years as senior advisor to State Superintendent Randy Dorn.  I am an enthusiastic supporter of public schools.

The federal government can and should offer financial assistance to states to fund schools, but Congress should not become the Great School Board on the Potomac.

    • Today, the federal government is forcing schools to adopt certain standards and meet federal testing requirements or face the loss of federal funding. That must stop.
    • States should be absolutely free to adopt standards and systems to assess student performance, including the new Common Core Standards, if that is their choice. But that choice should not be driven by dictates and blackmail from Washington DC.
    • Most federal funding comes in the form of two programs: special education (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and Title 1 funding for kids at academic risk. The federal government should require states to demonstrate, using multiple measures, not just testing, that those funds are being spent effectively and efficiently.  But that oversight should not extend beyond those federally funded programs.

And we should continue to strengthen financial aid for higher education.  The federal government should be as generous as possible in terms of grants and loan programs, within the context of an overall debt reduction strategy.  Higher education is an investment that yields economic growth and better jobs for more Americans!

Patty Murray

  • When we posed a series of questions regarding education to Ms. Murray she chose not to respond
