What is 5599 and why should you sign the petition?

Seems like education has gotten more and more political. Today we ask that you share the information and links in this article with every voter you can in the State of Washington. Deadline for signatures: July 15th.

It’s imperative that this initiative moves forward and time is of the essence.

First, here’s a link to the website: https://www.reject5599.com/

So what is 5599?  The article in this link does a good job outlining what’s happening: https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/news/washington-residents-submit-referendum-to-reject-5599/

In essence, under certain circumstances, the State has the ability to allow “gender affirming” surgery and treatments without notification or approval of the parents…but the parents may be forced to cover the cost.

“The new law extends as compelling reasons issues such as a youth seeking reproductive care, such as an abortion, or a youth seeking gender-affirming care, including treatment for gender dysphoria.”

Want to decide what the bill actually says?  https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2023-24/Pdf/Bills/Senate%20Passed%20Legislature/5599-S.PL.pdf?q=20230518225716

From the Reject 5599 website:

SB 5599 rebrands parents as abusers and hides kids from parents

  • KOMO News quoted Governor Inslee saying, “If a young person is totally estranged from their parents and has no meaningful relationship we need someone to care for that child and the way the legislation is set up is essentially, the Department of Children Youth and Families will step in to that position to care for that child so you have someone looking out for their benefit,” Inslee said. “In the real world we want these kids to be protected and not homeless and that’s basically the reason for this bill.” https://komonews.com/amp/news/local/senate-bill-5599-transgender-at-risk-youth-gender-affirming-reproductive-care-washington-state-shelters-dcyf-foster-kids-protests-rallies-governor-jay-inslee-olympia-state-capitol-lgbtq-children

✔️ False. Any runaway youth already has access to shelters. What the new law does is rebrand involved parents as abusers so that shelters and host homes can contact DCYF instead of the parents to notify families of their child’s whereabouts.
