As of early 2025, several Washington school districts are under state financial oversight due to budget challenges, with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) monitoring their financial health through binding conditions or enhanced oversight.
Mount Baker School District is under binding conditions, with updates issued through October 20, 2025. The district faces financial distress due to declining enrollment, inflation, and reduced state and federal funding.
Prescott School District is under enhanced financial oversight, with a Financial Oversight Committee active as of June 2025. The district has been under state scrutiny since at least March 2024 due to budget deficits and financial instability.
Tukwila School District remains under binding conditions, with a binding conditions update issued on January 31, 2025.
Yelm School District is under binding conditions, with a letter issued on September 4, 2024, and ongoing monitoring.
Shelton School District is under binding conditions, with a letter issued on January 10, 2025.
Mabton School District is under binding conditions, with a letter issued on June 4, 2025.
Bellevue School District is under binding conditions, with a letter issued on July 10, 2025.
Marysville School District is under enhanced financial oversight, having been placed under a Financial Oversight Committee in August 2024. The district is in a three-year recovery plan to address a $17.5 million deficit, with the state exercising significant oversight over financial decisions.
These districts are under state oversight due to their inability to produce balanced budgets, with OSPI stepping in to ensure fiscal responsibility and prevent insolvency. The state’s authority increases as financial conditions worsen, potentially leading to enhanced oversight or, in rare cases, district dissolution.
In addition, other districts are borrowing against future revenues (example: Vancouver School District). Washougal SD just came off the watch list.
