It’s been a while since we brought you examples of math being taught under Common Core. Before we get to that are you old enough to remember the “new math” of the 1980’s? It was an attempt to change how math was taught and was not only a dismal failure it harmed ten’s of thousands of children. I don’t think that anyone disagrees that we all learn differently and to maximize the learning experience we need to have different tools and approaches. That being said math is math. Learning the basics is critical to a working life in our society.
Ok…today we bring you a broad range of examples of the “new and better” Common Core math. Check out some of the links we’ve pulled examples from and then share your thoughts on the subject. Do you like CC Math or not and if so why or why not?
Let’s begin…are you ready? [Note: We are providing only a TINY number of examples]
First, watch this video clip of a mom who just got back from learning how Common Core math is being taught. She shares an example of what she learned. What say you? https://www.facebook.com/DisdainForPlebs/videos/988574334556347/
Now for some examples and links to even more examples. I’m sure there are a few students who would find this approach useful….but not most. So, why change the whole system?
Problem-Attic – They provide examples (over 600) CC math problems broken out by grade level
Why CC Math seems so weird – This is a 3 minute YouTube video that tries to explain any people over the age of 20 think math is way more complicated that it should be
George Mason University – A short video clip that shows college students talking about the CC approach to math for the problem 32-12=?
Abbott and Costello 7×13=28 – This is just one version of their classic math example. Note that under Common Core your answer is correct (even if it’s wrong) if you can show your work
How about the father who was so irritated with what he perceived to be Common Core math that was so complicated he wrote a check to his child’s school and told them that if they could decode it they could cash it….
